The future of girls’ golf in Ohio looks brighter than ever as two incoming high school freshmen made headlines at the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation Showcase on July 22 at Avon Oaks Country Club.
Always a great preview of the upcoming high school golf season, the Showcase has been serving as the unofficial kickoff to the season for the past 23 years. Winning the tournament this year was incoming Brunswick freshman Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble, who shot four under par 68, scoring seven birdies along the way. And also playing in her first high school tournament, Kellan Gleason scored her first hole in one on #8. This Avon resident will be attending Magnificat High School this fall.
“We were thrilled to host 12 high school teams, along with 26 girls playing as individuals from across the state. In addition to an 18-hole tournament, the girls also had an opportunity to hone their game, as we assembled past LPGA Tour players, local PGA and LPGA professionals and golf industry leaders all in one location to share their expertise.”
Clinics included a rules seminar, bunker shot techniques, and an on-course clinic led by tournament headliners LPGA tour professionals Barb Mucha and Janice Moodie exploring the importance of the mental process to the game.
“This is a game of honor and integrity no matter what level you play at,” says Barb Mucha, a Parma Heights native who won five LPGA Tournaments during her career.
In a repeat performance, Magnificat High School won top team honors, followed by Hudson High School and Brunswick High School. Four of its players finished in the top 10. Other teams competing in the event included Aurora, Avon, Chagrin Falls, Hudson, Lake Catholic, Laurel, Olmsted Falls, Shaker Heights and Southern Local.
